WCRC at Mt Washington in 2011

WCRC runners and volunteers at Mt Washington in 2011

Registration for the lottery for entry to the 2012 Mt. Washington Road Race (http://www.mountwashingtonroadrace.com/) opens February 15 and closes on March 15! The race itself is Saturday June 16. Every year, the Winner’s Circle Running Club sends a large group to “the Mountain” for a challenging run followed by a great post-race cookout. In 2011 we had 47 WCRC runners, 15 water stop volunteers and several drivers. If it sounds intriguing (or if you’re bull-headed like a lot of us and think “this is my year to beat the Mountain”), you need to sign up for the lottery! In theory, you can sign up any time between February 15 and March 15, but many of us are superstitious and sign up first thing when the lottery opens!!!

When you register, be sure to indicate in the team field that you are a member of the Winner’s Circle Running Club, WHETHER OR NOT you think you can score on a Circle team.

WCRC also has a small number of race numbers that are given directly to the club to issue, in return for managing the first water stop on the way up (the runners who get these numbers still have to pay the race entry fee of course). These numbers are given out by the club based on a variety of criteria including the need to fill out teams, past service at the water stop, club involvement, and so forth. However, people who couldn’t be bothered to even try to get in via the lottery can not expect to be considered high priority for club numbers. Demand for the club numbers is usually VERY HIGH from active WCRC members (consistent race volunteers, fast runners, board members) who signed up for the lottery but did not get selected. If you want to take part in the event, you need to sign up for the lottery!!!

NOTE: THE TURNAROUND FOR THE CLUB NUMBERS WILL BE VERY QUICK AGAIN THIS YEAR, FOLLOWING THE CLOSING OF THE LOTTERY IN MID-MARCH AND THE SUBSEQUENT ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE LOTTERY RESULTS ON MARCH 16. IF YOU PUT IN FOR THE LOTTERY AND DO NOT GET ACCEPTED AND WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A CLUB NUMBER, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO SUBMIT A REQUEST TO THE CLUB IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE LOTTERY RESULTS ARE POSTED. A SPECIAL WCRC EMAIL SOLICITING SUCH REQUESTS WILL BE SENT OUT AT THAT TIME.

This year, runners who qualified for lottery bypasses based on last year’s results were already sent individualized instructions on how to register. If you have any questions/concerns relative to a performance based lottery bypass, contact the race organizers ASAP (you can find the contact info at the race website).

Volunteers will also be needed to help at the WCRC managed water stop and to ferry WCRC vehicles to the top before the race. WCRC staffs the first water stop on the mountain. Being first, the WCRC stop is a good one for volunteers: it is very busy but for a relatively compact period of time (no hanging out needed) since the runners are not yet fully spread out over the Mt. This is a great way to see the race and enjoy the post-race cookout.

If you would prefer to see the race from the summit, you can help out as a volunteer driver. Cars are sent to the top prior to the race in order to provide transportation to the runners headed back down after the finish. Often, WCRC has runners willing to send their cars to the top (in order to ensure rides back down) but with no one to drive them up. Note that generally you only have to drive up the Mt (the easy direction). The owner of the car will drive it back down (the hard direction). If you’d like to drive someone’s car to the top and watch the race finish from the summit, the easiest thing to do is to contact directly any WCRC member you know who is running and volunteer to drive their car or give them a ride down. Note that race rules only allow one person per car (the driver) on the way up prior to the race. Each car must bring at least 3 runners back down.
