At the May monthly meeting, WCRC members voiced their support for making a club donation to The One Fund Boston, Inc. to help those affected by the tragedy at the 2013 Boston Marathon on April 15. Many WCRC members were on or near Boylston Street at the time (fortunately no WCRC members were physically harmed). All WCRC members take pride in the Boston Marathon as members of the New England running community. In that context, the WCRC Board of Directors voted unanimously to donate $1000 directly from the club’s general fund to The One Fund Boston, Inc. In addition, the club agreed to partner in the organization of the Greater Newburyport Boston Strong 2.62 Mile Benefit Fun Run to raise additional support from the community for The One Fund Boston.

Mark your calendars! The Greater Newburyport Supports Boston Strong 2.62 Mile Benefit Fun Run will be held on Sunday June 2 at 10am to benefit the One Fund! A group of local moms, in partnership with the Winner’s Circle Running Club, have organized this running/walking event to support the One Fund and the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Everything is in place (in an amazingly short time thanks to the dedication of the event committee) for a great day supporting a cause which touches the entire running community. Click on the logo above for more event details. If you are a runner/walker, sign up now to support the cause. If you are a local business owner who would like to join in by contributing to the fun, please let us know! We are looking for cash sponsors as well as donations for a raffle. We have some great things planned for June 2 and we hope to see many of you there!

The 24th Annual Evelyn’s Run for the Roses 5K Women’s Road Race plus Non-Competitive Walk will be run on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Winner’s Circle, just off of the Rte. 110 exit of Rte. 95, in Salisbury, MA. The women’s race will start at 11:30 AM. The race features the popular Mother/Daughter and Sister/Sister women’s team award divisions. As in the past, profits and donations from the race will benefit A Safe Place, Inc. (Portsmouth, NH) and the Jeanne Geiger Women’s Crisis Center (Newburyport, MA).

New last year, the Men’s Run for the Women will be run in chase format. Men run the same 5K course but with the start delayed by 3 minutes. Women and men (with a 3 minute penalty) compete for the same overall and age division awards. This new aspect was introduced into the event as a fun way for men to help raise money for the same great causes.

New this year: $100 CASH PRIZE to the first overall finisher… Regardless of gender! The Chase format is sure to make this interesting!!

The Run for the Roses is the second race of the WCRC Speed Series 4-3-2-1. The four race series began at the end of March at the April Fool’s 4 Mile Race, and continues in June with the Pat Polletta 2 Mile Race, and finishes in August at the High Street Mile. In fact, if you ran the 2013 April Fool’s 4 Miler you can still register for all three of the remaining series races at once by registering for the Speed Series – “It’s all about running faster.”
